Welcome to the Northeastern University United Nations Association Website

The United Nations Association is the most interactive and integrated student group for Northeastern Students interested in foreign policy, international relations and the finer points of global politics. Weekly meetings are complemented by collaboration with the Model UN and Model Arab League courses offered by the Political Science Department as part of NU’s experiential education. The team attends numerous prestigious collegiate simulated conferences each semester, as well as hosting our own various conferences for middle school, high school and college students. There is simply no better way for students to engage in and discuss the most prominent international current events while perfecting debate and public speaking skills.

The United Nations Association of Northeastern (UNA) just wrapped up another successful year of competitive Model UN and Model Arab League simulations, and on-campus conferences and events! In 2008-2009, our club attended Model UN and Model Arab League conferences in Boston, Washington, D.C., and South Carolina, with strong performances at each of them. We also hosted over 600 high school and middle school students here at Northeastern for the Model UN simulations that we run each year in conjunction with the United Nations Association of Greater Boston (UNA-GB).

We began the year in the fall by attending the Boston Area Regional Model United Nations (BARMUN) conference, an exciting “”crisis” simulation featuring mock sessions of the French and Egyptian Cabinets, World Diamond Congress, and Muslim Brotherhood, among others. We took home eight individual awards and won Outstanding Delegation overall. Special kudos go to Khalid Lum for receiving the Best Crisis Delegate award!

Also during the fall semester, we hosted the Northeast Regional Model Arab League (NERMAL), the Boston Middle School Model UN (MSMUN), and co-hosted an on-campus Election Watch party in AfterHours with several other student groups. In February, we capped off our Model UN season by attending the Harvard National Model United Nations conference, fielding one of the largest delegations in attendance with over 65 delegates, and putting on a strong showing in all of the committees.

The spring semester is Model Arab League season for the UNA, which we kicked off by flying down to Spartanburg, South Carolina to compete in the Southeast Regional Model Arab League Conference (SERMAL). Northeastern won awards in 6 of the 8 committees, and placed second out of all the schools in attendance. As usual, we all came home missing the sweet tea, and with a little bit of a Southern twang in our accents. Special thanks go to Head Delegate Alex Chapman for her hard work in preparing everyone for the conference, and for putting up with the team for just a little bit longer than expected, as we found ourselves stuck in Charlotte for an extra night thanks to a flight delay –certainly a team bonding experience!

Just two weeks later, we took the train down to Washington, D.C. for the National University Model Arab League, which was held at Georgetown University this year. After visiting the Iraqi embassy and meeting with a representative from the Iraqi government, we were ready to debate. Northeastern took home awards in three committees, as well as placed third overall. Special congratulations go to Daniel Rothschild for receiving the Outstanding Chair award, and to Jason Lederman, our head delegate, for a job well done in leading the team!

Congratulations to everyone on a fun and successful year! We’re all looking forward to another great year of UNA in 2009-2010.
